GOVERNMENT Virginia has a Mayor/Council form of government.
They are supported by a full-time city staff and citizen commissions and many volunteer
groups. See our GOVERNMENT page. LAW ENFORCEMENT Our responsive twenty-two member police department
provides excellent protection. There is also a sheriff's station located in the St.
Louis County Court House located in downtown Virginia. AMBULANCE & FIRE PROTECTION Our twenty-one member department provides twenty-four
hour per day protection. There are 2 levels of medically trained Firefighters.
The proper terms for a Virginia Firefighter are Firefighter Paramedic and Firefighter
EMT. The Virginia Fire Department is made up of both Nationally Registered
paramedics and EMT's. 3 (ALS) Advanced Life Support ambulances are based out of
Virginia. It was 1987 when the Virginia ambulance service became a state licensed
advanced life support provider. They provide advanced life support to over 500
square miles of area and ambulance transportation will intercept with surrounding
ambulance service. CHURCHES Virginia is home to twenty-five churches covering most
denominations. CHARITIES There is a wide spectrum of charitable organizations
represented in Virginia. Among them are: United Way, Salvation Army and Red
Cross. In addition, there are many local organizations who are intensely involved
with helping the area needy. SERVICE CLUBS A list of Virginia area clubs is available through the
Virginia Area Chamber of Commerce. All major Service Clubs are represented
including: Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Elks, Servicemans Club, Soroptomists. SENIOR CITIZENS The Virginia Senior Citizens are served by a wide
variety of services. This area offers health services, home services, financial
aid, senior centers, and support groups. There is a wide selection of housing to fit
the needs of our elderly. A nutrition program is available, help with shopping, and
a network of education and caring. MEDIA The Mesabi Daily News is published seven days a week with a wide circulation. The Manney Shopper is a free local advertiser published once weekly. The Duluth New Tribune is widely circulated in the area and is available for home delivery in Virginia. USA Today, Minneapolis Tribune, and the Wall Street Journal are all available locally on same day as published. The radio stations available in this area offer listening pleasure for all, no matter what their preference may be. There are four local television channels out of Duluth
that can be seen in the area. In addition, the local cable TV offers a wide variety
of channels. OTHER SERVICES One of St. Louis Country's three court houses is located in Virginia, and many county services function from Virginia. A State Highway Department office, District Forest Service office, and a State Wildlife office.
