Education is another vital asset helping to mold the fine qualities of our citizenry. Educational opportunities exist for virtually all Virginia area residents. Approximately 83% of Virginia's high school graduates continue their education at an institute of higher learning. Virginia High School is known for academic and innovative programming. Virginia students regularly participate in the Knowledge Bowl on both a regional and state level. Adults interested in furthering their education can choose from a variety of community education programs offered by Independent School District (ISD) Number 706 and the Mesabi Range Community and Technical College. Virginia has a high proportion of well-educated people dedicated to supporting quality programs in our community. ISD Number 706 has one of the best educational systems
in the state. There are two elementary schools housing grades kindergarten through
sixth with a total of 911 students . The secondary school, consisting of grades
seven through twelve has a total enrollment of 895. The learner to instructor ratio
is 22/1in the elementary schools and in the secondary schools is 14/1. MARQUETTE SCHOOL Marquette is a parochial school with 116 students, grades kindergarten through sixth and 14 preschoolers age three and four. NEW LIFE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL New Life Christian School is a private religious school with an enrollment of 55 students, grades kindergarten through twelve. MESABI RANGE
COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE
Mesabi Range Community College and the Eveleth Area Vocational-Technical Institute have merged to form the Mesabi Range Community and Technical College. They now offer academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, paraprofessional programs business administration, high technology and one and two year vocational training. Mesabi Range is also committed to the philosophy of learning across the life span - providing community-oriented, educational, and recreational opportunities to all age groups. Featured are a wide range of community outreach programs, including "college for kids", enrichment and acceleration for high school students, continuing education for adults and special events for seniors. Mesabi Range offers extensions courses for the University of Minnesota toward a 4-year degree. FOUR-YEAR SCHOOLS St. Scholastica and a branch of the University of
Minnesota are located 60 miles south in Duluth. CHILD CARE Child care in Virginia includes thirty-two licensed
family day-care facilities. Among these licensed facilities is the Appletree
Learning Center and Chicagami Child Care. The Quad-City area has a total of
sixty-two licensed day care facilities. TRAINING JOB TRAINING PARTNERSHIP ACT The purpose of JTPA is to establish programs that will prepare youth and unemployed adults for entry into the labor force. Training courses include, but are not limited to, remedial education, vocational counseling, classroom instruction, school-to-work transition help, temporary work experience, on-the-job training, job upgrading and retraining, advanced career training, job-seeking help, and job placement. Services to employers are: an evaluation of trainees before they are referred for interviews, reimbursements for extraordinary costs of training, special tax credits for hiring certain workers under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, labor market information, and customized training to meet the particular needs of a business industry. LIVES IN TRANSITION PROGRAM This program assists low-income individuals, primarily displaced homemakers. Help with life and career planning services enable individuals to become independent.
