Retail figures reflect those sales for Standard
Industrial Codes Downtown Virginia has retail stores covering and extending from a five block stretch of Chestnut Street. The 256,344 square foot Thunderbird Mall which currently houses 32 businesses is located in the southern part of the city adjacent to Highway 53. The Highway 53 corridor is home to many other businesses and is increasing rapidly. Two other retail areas located in Virginia are the Northgate Plaza and the 8th Street locations. Some of the regional and national stores found in Virginia are J.C.Penney, Herbergers, K-Mart, Target and many specialty stores. Some of the major grocery stores in our area are Festival, Super One and IGA. In addition a number of nationally known food franchise operations are located in Virginia including McDonalds, Hardees, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Grandma's, Domino's, Pizza Hut and many others. Many local and regional businesses help to give us a well-rounded and very complete retail community. Businesses in Virginia are constantly striving to improve. Working together to expand area business opportunities are local business, industry, finance, labor and governmental groups.
DOWNTOWN REDEVELOPMENT The downtown area has in the past years gone through many changes. The downtown Chestnut Street was designated a Historical District in 1997. The City of Virginia recently did a total new streetscape design for Chestnut Street. Many of the businesses have taken advantage of the Storefront renovation and revolving loan programs to upgrade the look of their business. HIGHWAY 53 CORRIDOR The Highway 53 corridor retail area is expanding. More and more businesses are taking advantage of the easy access from a major highway. Thunderbird Mall currently houses 32 businesses. Major chain restaurants, a Target Store, a grocery store and a car dealer all contribute to the business climate in that area. Plans are in progress for other major businesses to locate along Highway 53. In addition to the Downtown retail area and Highway 53 retail area, there are two other retail areas in Virginia, the Northgate Plaza area and the 8th Street South area. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AGENCIES The Laurentian Chamber of Commerce, established in 1922, continues to promote the Virginia area throughout the year. A full-time staff is available to aid individuals with answers to their concerns. The Virginia Economic Development (VEDA) was established in 1995 to promote the area and provide specific information and assistance to new and expanding businesses. The Heart of Virginia is an organization established in 1995 and devoted to the revitalization and the historic preservation of the downtown Virginia district. The IRRRB is located just south of Virginia and actively promotes economic development by aiding VEDA and industrial clients through various programs. The Virginia-Eveleth Economic Development Authority (VEEDA) was established in 1996 as a joint venture of the Cities of Virginia and Eveleth. VEEDA developed Progress Park, a high-tech industrial park that was carved out of the rugged terrain between the two cities.
INDUSTRIAL SITES The city offers various developed sites to choose from, including full services and a variety of buildings available for occupancy. There are a number of Industrial Parks in the city and immediately adjacent including:
